Praise and Encouragement

Appropriate praise and encouragement are important for your child's development. Not only can it make your children feel loved and appreciated, but it can also boost their confidence, motivation, and positive behaviour, while also helping to establish a good parent-child relationship. #StayOkayHK would like to share some tips on praising and encouraging children, helping parents effectively and clearly express their praise and encouragement so that children can become better and more confident!

Instead of simply saying "You're so smart" or "You're great!," parents can describe their child’s behaviour specifically.

For example: “I liked how you said ‘please.”, “Thank you for cleaning up the dishes on the table.”

It’s important to emphasise their effort and the contribution, rather than just the results.

For example, instead of just saying, “You did really well on your English exam!” you could say, “We really appreciate the effort you put into studying for this English exam!”

You don’t need to wait for perfection before giving praise. Even small improvements during their positive attitude and effort deserve praise .

Sincere praise and encouragement can help children feel loved, valued, and affirmed, which helps to improve parent-child relationship.
